FlyTek Catalogue : FlyTek Tutorials : FlyTek 3D Pike Fly

FlyTek 3D Pike Fly FlyTek 3D Pike Fly
Back by popular demand the deadlist Pike fly Kevin has ever come up with. He first tied this fly six years ago since then it has taken the pike flyfishing world by storm.

It is based around saltwater guru Bob `Pops` Popovics 3D fly but uses a fine more mobile synthetic material developed by Enrico Puglisi another great angler and fly dresser from the east coast of the USA

This is matching the hatch big style!!!!

Materials Required

Body:EP Enrico`s Fibres white, Olive, Orange, Yellow, Red, Black etc

Thread; I prefere Larva Lace clear mono thread but the super strong 10/0 thead bu Giorgio Benecchi is also useful.

Hooks: 3/0 -6/0 FlyTek Predator hook or 5/0 Daiichi Stinger Hook

Sparkle: EP Sparkle or our own Enhancer dub.

Eyes:EP Solid plastic eyes to suit fly size

Essential Tools; Anvil Taperizing Scissors, these are used finish the final shape of the flyonce you have mastered the fly you will find that you can shape the fly during the build and have very little trimming to do.

All materials can be purchased from the website. A printed copy of the instructions are available free with orders of EP Products or at the cost of £1.00 to cover p&p

Step 1
Attach thread on top of hook opposite barb and tie a length of EP Fibre. Make this as long as the total length of fly you require.

ONLY USE A PENCIL THICKNESS OF MATERIAL AT A TIME DURING ALL STAGES OF THIS FLY.

Step 1

Step 2 Step 2
Now tie in a belly section of the same colour material. This should be three quarters the length of the first piece you tied in. See picture scissor points are pointing to where it should be tied in.

Step 3
Now tie in a shoulder section on eachside of the fly. Do not let any EP Fibres go on top of the fly. See picture

These sections should be 3/4 the length of the belly section

Step 3

Step 4 Step 4
This picture shows you the profile of the shoulders when the fibres have been stroked back

Step 5
Next take your sparkle material a pull a small clump out of the packet. This fine material will come out in all different lengths which is ideal.

Lay this ontop of the shank where you tied in the shoulders, so the longest fibres are the length of the tail and the shrouds the shoulders. Take a couple of turns of thread around it to trap it down. If you have any sparkle pointing towards the eye of the hook just fold them back so they fan around the shank.

Step 5

Step 6 Step 6
This is how it looks with the sparkle folded back

Step 7
repeat steps 2, 3, 5 making sure that the belly and shoulder sections are three quarters the length of the previous sections and apply your sparkle as step 5,6

Then add your first layer of darker back colour. No thicker than a pencil width

Step 7

Step 8 Step 8
Add more sparkle and then repeat steps 2,3, 5

Step 9
Add another back section three quarters the length of the first piece. Then repeat steps 2, 3, 5

Step 9

Step10 Step10
When you get close to the eye, replace the white belly section with red or orange EP Fibres and then two more shoulder sections in white (or for greater effect the same colour as the belly) and add more sparkle.

Step 11
Add more of your back colour three quarters the length of the last. There should be roughly the same length of material pointing over the eye. Fold this back and tie down this will make the bait fish profile wider across the shoulders as it would be in a natural..

Step 11

Step 12 Step 12
Whip finish the fly and trim the thread. Hold the fly at the eye and brush it the full length along the sides and underneath with a fine wire dog brush. (These are a couple of quid from pet shops) this will blend the sparkle with the EP Fibres to give the fly a life like flash.

step 13
Next stroke the fibres back with your fingers and hopefully you should have the outline of your baitfish

step 13

step14 step14
Hold the fly in your left hand and with your taperizing scissors and starting at the back of the fly make small cuts and at the same time stroke back with the scissors this will remove some of the material and the material that was missed by the toothed blades will be tapered by the flat blade blending the materials.

It is easier than it sounds

Step 15
Taper the fly from front to back. The main outline will be their you will just need to tidy it up a little. See photo

Step 15

Step 16 Step 16
Now shape the belly so it blends into the tail

Step 17
The fly is almost finished. if you look at it from any angle it you can see the profile is 3D and not a flat. You will also notice that it is very very light and it stays that way when you fish it because it sheds water on the first back cast.

Step 17

Step 18 Step 18
After a final trim this is the shape I look for

Step 19
Take the EP Solid plastic eyes and snap the stalks off the back you should be left with a small stub flatten this with a pair of pliers.

Now mix a small amount of 5 min epoxy and apply a small amount to the threads where you whip finished.

Next put a small blob of epoxy where you want your first eye (see picture) and press you eye to it (plastic not real)

Tricky bit!!! Hold the fly in your hand and put your fore finger over the eye you have put on and turn the fly over , add ablob of epoxy and the other eye whithout letting the first one drop off..

As the epoxy starts to go off you can slide the eyes in to their final position keeping them level and in the same position on bothe sides.

Step 19

Step 20 Step 20
Mix a little more epoxy and push it in between the eyes above and below the shank. This will stop even the most aggressive Pike biting the eyes off.

On most of my flies 3/0 and bigger I use 9mm eyes but if I want the fly to fish more nose down like a bottom feeding fry I add 12mm eyes,

A few colours to try
Add stripes for Perch fry. We have now added more colours to the stripes for a awsome effect.

When I can keep one in the shop long enough to photograph I will put it up

We catch 80% of our pike on the orange and yellow fly

A few colours to try

Perch Perch
This is the 3D fly with the new Perch markings. The standard stripes worked ok but these new markings are almost as successful as our orange and yellow fly.

The fly is tied with olive or dark olive over yellow with orange at the throat. The fly is then marked with olive triangles on each side followed by a red `V` outline and this is followed by a black `V` outline.

The colours will blend together when wet and look awsome.

Red/White
A classic Pike colour
