Small tungsten beads are essential for the angler who wishes their fly to penetrate the surface rapidly and sink. Tunsten is significantly heavier than brass and lead and adds the maximum weight for the minimum volume allowing slim flies to be tied - another factor in helping flies sink rapidly.
